My Turn

Hydeia Green, Dorchester County Media Specialist/Instructional Assistant

My passion for working in the school system comes froma deep belief that education changes lives. Every day, I see how we help students grow, learn, and become confident. I started teaching at Maces Lane Middle in 2022 as a long-term substitute. I’m currently working as a media specialist instructional assistant and pursuing my education degree. Yes, I am a “jack of all trades”—one with a passion for educating students. My work in the school system lets me give back to the place my husband Jerrad Thomas, also a school employee, and I call home. I even attended Maces Lane as a student!

As educators, when we support students, we’re supporting their families and neighborhoods too. Because groceries are so expensive now, I started a community garden behind our school to ensure our students always have healthy food. I want every student to feel proud of who they are, where they’re from, and to know they matter.

My union values are fairness, respect, advocacy, and teamwork. I’ve seen how union actions lead to positive changes, like better classroom resources and safer working conditions. This year, I attended my very first lobbying event—it was exhilarating. It feels good to know that our efforts help not just ourselves, but also the students we care about. The union teaches me that everyone’s story matters and that we are stronger when we lift each other.

As an ESP Bill of Rights organizer, my goal is to make sure ESPs have rights, respect, and good working conditions. This summer, I’ll be canvassing to spread the word and build membership. I believe that when ESPs are supported, students and teachers benefit, too. This work inspires me because I see how much ESPs care about students and how hard they work every day. I’m proud to help them find their voice and stand up for their rights. I also help build bridges between ESPs and teachers, so we can all work together for the good of our schools.

In all these roles, I am inspired by the people around me. Working in the school system and being part of the union lets me help others, stand up for what’s right, and make my community stronger. I feel as if we’re a big family. I’m proud to be an educator, a union member, and an ESP Bill of Rights organizer. Every day, I’m reminded that together we can make a difference. I look forward to continuing this work, knowing that every effort counts and every person matters.
