MSEA Statement on Hogan’s Newest Attacks on Public Schools
The Governor Distracts from $3 Billion in School Underfunding
This morning, Gov. Hogan once again launched a political attack on Maryland’s public schools.
Sean Johnson, Director of Legislative Affairs for the Maryland State Education Association, released the following statement:
“Gov. Hogan’s decision to once again stand with Betsy DeVos and against the educators, parents, and civil rights groups who helped develop our state’s smarter and stronger school accountability system under the Protect Our Schools Act is a distraction. Under the Hogan Administration, our public schools have been underfunded by $3 billion every single year—that means the average school in our state is underfunded by $2 million. This underfunding has led to larger class sizes and cuts to student programs. The governor should stop attacking our public schools and start rolling up his sleeves with the rest of the state’s leaders to reverse this shameful underfunding and make sure the Kirwan Commission’s recommendations become law.”
