Beverly Corelle Scholarship

MSEA is pleased to announce the Beverly Corelle Scholarship which provides two scholarship opportunities for MSEA members pursuing degrees in education.

Beverly Corelle served as president of the Maryland State Teachers Association from 1985-1989. She fought for the rights of the underserved and was a civic leader in her community, A lifelong educator, Ms. Corelle was committed to improving public education for students, teachers, and support professionals. A devoted union member, Ms. Corelle bequeathed half of her estate to the Maryland State Education Association for the express purpose of creating a teacher scholarship grant program for members of the MSEA who are continuing their education.

After graduating high school, Beverly earned a BA in Chemistry and Mathematics from Catawba College in Salisbury, where she was presented the Whitener Award, the highest honor given at graduation, and served as a leader and award recipient in many of her college organizations. She went on to receive a BS in Chemistry from the University of Tennessee, and later an MA in Education Administration from Johns Hopkins University. Her heart was in teaching and she taught many years in the public high school system, Old Dominion University in Virginia, and Virginia Wesleyan College.

In accordance with her wishes, at the end of October 2023 MSEA launched the application for the Beverly Corelle MSEA Educator Scholarship. This is a one-year, non-renewable scholarship. Information detailing the scholarship criteria and a link to the applications are posted below. The deadline to apply is 5:00 p.m. on March 22, 2024. Late applications will not be considered.

There are two application forms. Please be sure you are completing the correct application. All applicants must be members of MSEA.
