Delegates to MSEA’s Representative Assembly met in a special session in May to approve the MSEA Endorsement Council’s recommendation of Angela Alsobrooks for U.S. Senate to fill the seat of retiring Sen. Ben Cardin. That recommendation was then forwarded to, and approved by, NEA.
Alsobrooks is the current Prince George’s county executive, elected in 2018, and a former state’s attorney and full-time domestic violence prosecutor. She is the first woman to hold the position and the first Black woman elected to the office of county executive in Maryland history. She has focused on creating jobs and growing economic opportunity, investing in education and breaking ground on 10 new schools, expanding access to health care, mental health and addiction treatment, youth outreach, and making sure people are safe.
“I have personally witnessed Angela’s steadfast commitment to our community, particularly in her dedication to our schools,” says Dr. Donna Christy, president of the Prince George’s County Educators’ Association. “Her willingness to listen, learn, and understand from educators, parents, and students is also commendable. Angela actively seeks diverse perspectives and is dedicated to uniting these voices to address pressing educational needs. Her approach is marked by compassion and a pragmatic desire to facilitate positive change.
“Angela Alsobrooks will bring her much needed perspective to the Senate, using her voice to ensure that every student—no matter their race, place, or background—has access to quality public schools,” says NEA President Becky Pringle. “We are proud to recommend her for U.S. Senate.”
“As our U.S. Senator, I’m confident that Angela will continue to engage deeply with educational stakeholders, collaboratively working with her colleagues to advocate for policies that enhance educational opportunities and uphold every individual’s essential rights and freedoms. Angela is not merely a candidate; she is a dedicated leader committed to meaningful change in our educational system.”
