I am so proud to have served as the president of MSEA—the largest labor union in Maryland and growing every day. I am so proud of the collective work we have done resulting in the historic funding of public education, seeing educators using their voices on boards and in elected offices where decisions are being made across the state, and standing up for the funding, respect, and safety needed in each local.
I am proud of our work with NEA to enhance student-led programs, such as the Minority Scholars Program and Students of Color Alliance, along with protecting a true and honest education through Read Across America, Little Free Library builds and donations, and grants to members along with legislation such as the Freedom to Read Act and anti-discrimination bills passed in Maryland. I am proud of our efforts to improve the lives and working conditions for all public school employees through our Education Support Professional Bill of Rights, enhanced collective bargaining, paid student internships for aspiring educators, and adding into our union more administrator units and now community colleges.
As I now join the ranks of our MSEA retirees, I know we have accomplished much and withstood the attacks on public education and our rights as a union, including from our previous governor. We helped carry our state through a global pandemic, defied the national discourse by protecting individual rights and freedoms, and we continue to utilize the power of our vote by electing pro-public education leaders up and down the ballot…and we will again in November!
The state of our union is strong and the power of our union is in our collective voice. MSEA, it’s been my honor to serve with you and for you, and let’s continue to go, fight, win!
