Coronavirus Updates and Resources from MSEA

In the middle of these challenging and rapidly evolving times, MSEA, NEA, and all of our local offices are here to support you and the students we serve. We will work to update you on resources and information from MSEA on a variety of fronts.

MSEA and Local Association Operating Status

MSEA is closed and staff are teleworking. We plan to continue to support, help, and empower members as well as we possibly can during the coming weeks. We encourage members to reach out to their local association presidents and staff with local-specific questions while schools remain closed. You can find contact information for your local by clicking here. Due to local office closures, email is likely a better mode of communication than phone.

Meals for Students

With schools closed for weeks, food insecurity among our impoverished students is a real concern. Thankfully, school systems are stepping up to provide meals for students who need them. MSEA's Learn More at 4

We are holding a weekly update via Facebook Live on Wednesdays at 4 p.m. featuring MSEA President Cheryl Bost and MSEA General Counsel Kristy Anderson, called “Learn More at 4.” You don’t need a Facebook account to watch; just click here to head over to the MSEA Facebook page and watch online. This is your time to get answers, ask questions, and bring up your concerns. We’re going to cover what we know about the top questions we’re getting from members and will do our best to answer as many questions as we can.

Join MSEA

Now more than ever, it's important for educators to stick together. MSEA has your back. If you're not yet a member, join today for free through our Early Enrollment program. The Early Enrollment Program offers first-time members enrollment for the next (2020-2021) membership year, plus selected benefits of membership, including coverage in the Employment Educators Liability insurance program, starting immediately upon completing the online enrollment procedure. This program is not available to you if you are now or have ever been a NEA member. Click here to join.

The #WhatIMiss Campaign

In the midst of all of the bad news, it's nice to have reminders of the good things. MSEA wants you to join in on our social media campaign, #WhatIMiss. You can download our template here, or create your own sign to post online. Let everyone know what you miss about your public school and show our community what makes Maryland public schools so special. Don't forget to use the hashtag #WhatIMiss and tag five friends and ask them to do the same. Times are challenging right now, but we can get through this together.

Regulatory Questions

We’ve heard a number of member questions regarding the impact of school closures on meals and services for our students in poverty, testing windows, the school calendar, special education service compliance, and more. Some of these questions will be determined locally; for federally-dictated policies, please read this update from NEA on IDEA, testing, and accountability. As we get answers or more information, we will share them via email, our website, or on our social media pages.

Maryland’s Primary Election

Remember: any registered voter can already skip the polls and vote by mail by signing up for an absentee ballot. Click here to learn more and register for an absentee ballot. Note that Maryland's primary election has been rescheduled to June out of public health concerns.

Moving Forward

Please know that we’re here if you need us. We will remain focused on helping members, on doing what we can to ensure that children have their basic needs taken care of, and supporting all educators, particularly those who are hourly workers and should be paid even if they are prevented from coming to school due to closures. Please check our social media pages on FacebookTwitter, and Instagram for additional updates.

We Are Here to Answer Your Questions

Do you have a question that wasn't addressed on this page? Send it to feedback@mseanea.org. If your question is local-specific, we suggest that you reach out to your local association or Uniserv director directly. You can find the local association contact info and directory here.
